2010 Challenge, weeks 5-8

Well folks, it looks like we might just settle into a nice rhythm this year. I know for Jeremy and I, we won’t be so frantic, rushing to get a new challenge every day. This shifting of gears has really become a blessing for us both.

The 2010 Challenge launched quite well earlier this month. For the past four weeks we’ve been submitting one shot a week, focusing on the idea of “resolution”. I, for one, have been quite satisfied with the labor and creativity you all have been putting into each week’s submission. There’s been some duplication, but even that has taken a bit of a personalized spin each time. So, keep up the good work!

For the next four weeks, we’d like to see you take some time each week to plan out your shot. The theme is now Natural Landscape. What does that mean? Well, Wikipedia says, “A natural landscape is one that is unaffected by human activity.” That means we need to find a location that appears to have NOT been touched by human hands. Now, I know that won’t be completely possibly for every photog, but I really want you to give it your best effort. Seriously, only you’ll know how hard you worked on finding the best location.

Photographically, that also means that we’re looking for you to compose something that’s significantly larger than yourself. These samples in this post should help to get you thinking.

Now, just because you find the best location doesn’t mean that you’ll choose the best time to shoot. Take into consideration that your main light source is the sun, and it’s always changing. So, choose the right time of the day as well.

Let’s not forget the guidelines, Ok? You can post your weekly shot any time during the week. When posting, please add your photo to the photochallenge.org pool on flickr, and tag the photos with “2010challenge” and “2010challengeXX”, where XX is the week in a two digit format (05, 06, 07, etc). Of course, you are welcome to join in at any time, and if you miss posting during one week, just make it up the following week. This is about having fun and challenging yourself to become a better photographer, so the rules are guidelines. You won’t be punished or banned from the group if you miss a week or make up a shot.

I’ve found a few decent articles to teach you a bit more, if you feel so inclined…

So, you’re all set then! Let’s see what you’ve got in your area. I can’t wait!

  1. Hmmm… a good challenge, I think… especially for those of us who live in cities or suburban sprawl. I just had a quick scan through my flickr stream, and out of 532 images, I counted 6 that were landscape shots with nothing overtly man-made in them, and nearly all of those were from vacation spots, not here were I live.
Gotta get my thinking cap on for this, that’s for sure…

  2. This will be a more difficult challenge, especially time wise getting out where I can find a clean landscape without any influence of man. I will admit to being a little disappointed because I was hoping for something more that I could work on creating in or around my home…but then I can accept the point of a challenge is getting me outside of what I was normally doing.

  3. I would have loved to take part in this but I’m afraid I live in Spalding part of the Fens ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fens ). I don’t think I’ll find anything round here. “A natural landscape is one that is unaffected by human activity” not a farmers field then.
I will have to wait for the next challenge I think.
Good luck to everyone else though.

P.S. I really love photochallenge.org. Thanks lads its got photography back on the agenda.

  4. I am glad I found this photo challenge with this theme because I like landscape when it’s natural. It’s so fscinating!
I picked my photo from my archive but usually I use newly shots for my photochallenges.
    Have a nice month!

  5. I found this photo challenge site, and thought I would try out my attempts at landscapes, we have prairies, and wintery blue skies with snow, so there are challenges to my area to find interest in the flat landscape, and contrast in the skies and scenery. It is very exciting to see clouds in the sky or sunrise or sunset and something other than foggy days. There have been some exciting submissions to learn from already.
