2012 Color Challenge

Holy cow it’s been a long time! I know you’ve missed me. I’ve missed me.

Well I’m back because I have a new idea. What’s this idea, you ask? No, you didn’t. You know the idea, it’s in this post title.

I was watching this short little video, promoting a cool app called Snapseed, by Nik Software. Apparently it’s been out for iOS devices, and it was just announced in desktop form for OSX, and soon after that for Android tablets. (Sorry, this wasn’t meant to promote some new app.)

Back to the video. The video has this dude challenging a few photographers to make an exhibit thematically geared towards one color each. Each photographer then heads out and sticks to their assigned color. It’s that simple. Go watch the video, to see what I mean: http://www.snapseed.com/

Obviously I saw this and said, “Um, welcome back PhotoChallenge.org, I missed you.”

The Challenge:

You select a color and shoot with that color in mind, all month long. Then next month, you choose another color. My goal is to shoot to my heart’s content, some months ending up with more accomplished than others. Then as 2012 nears its end, I’ll go through and select my top 9 photos from each month, arrange them into a clean 3×3 arrangement, and self-publish a 12 page book.

We really do need to know who’s participating, so we can all encourage each other. So for now, please comment with your intent, the color you’re choosing for January 2012, and where we can find your work as you publish it. For those of us that use photo-sharing websites that allow you to tag your images, please use “2012colorchallenge” or “#2012colorchallenge” to help us keep track easier.

I’ll be posting to SmugMug, Google+/Picasa, and maybe a few to Flickr (I’ve let my pro account expire there.) But at the end of each month I’ll post a recap blog post of my work at my personal blog.

  1. Yep, I’m in. I’ll probably do Blue for January, since all we have is blue skies and no rain. If the dry weather keeps up like this, I’ll be doing brown, orange, and yellow for the rest of the year.

  2. This is a great idea. I’ve been contemplating joining some other challenges, but really need a monthly one. I am going to totally take the easy way out and chose brown for January.

  3. Okay, I choose green. It’s not an easy color to shoot at this time of the year, at least where I live. Might as well give myself a challenge. I have an extra challenge this spring of sharing the DSLR with my son, who is taking a college-level B&W photography course.

Here I am on Google+ if anyone wants to follow. (You might drop me a line or leave a comment on my blog and let me know who you are. I’ve had to block a few spammers and the like, and I don’t want to block anyone from here.) https://plus.google.com/107490368237805452219/posts

  4. I finished a 365 photo challenge in 2011 and was looking for a new challenge. This sounds like a great idea, so I’m going to do it! I used an online list randomizer, and my color for January is going to be white. (And we finally got snow!)

  5. I had intentions of doing a similar project on my own but am very happy to have stumbled on this site!
I’d love to join the challenge! My color for January will be black (the challenger guy in the video inspired me).

    1. Glad to have you join us, Angie! Challenging yourself is one of the best ways to grow as a photographer. Obviously there’s a technical side to photography, but once you understand them and the practical side to your tools, the sky is the limit to your creativity and growth. Most of my own personal growth has come from seeking to accomplish what I’ve seen others accomplish. These personal mini-challenges have probably been where I’ve grown the most.

If you find satisfaction with our 2012 Color Challenge, and want a bit more, go back and try some of our past challenges. For two years we did an every other month challenge, which can be viewed from the menu in the header. But the best list is the daily challenge from 2009! That one has a different challenge for every day of the year!

      1. Thank you for the info on the other challenges as well. I am going to start the daily challenge as well. I love this and I hope I grow through it and become a better photographer 🙂

  6. Well January is on the verge of being over but maybe I can jump in anyway? I need something to get me taking more photos and this looks fun. How about I try a beige pic or two tonight to start (and end) the month off and carry on with Orange for February?

  7. Glad to have you both join us, Keith and Meghan!

I’ve never been one to consider late as late. It’s still only 1/12th of the way into 2012! Make sure you add the tag “2012colorchalenge”, so I can find your work. Meghan, maybe a blog post or two, posting your highlights could help. Deviantart doesn’t always show up when I google a tag.
